SDC updates.

Updating the SDC logs has, frankly, become a pain in the fundament.

All of that stuff is hard-coded in raw HTML using text editors. It has always been time consuming to do the updates.

Worse yet, both of the SDC log hosts are going away sooner or later; Apple is phasing out mac.com hosting, and I’m not sure what Commsite’s plans are (except they’re getting rid of the bga.com domain).

Lawrence and I have discussed this and made some preliminary plans to convert the SDC logs to a joint blog (where we both have admin/posting rights). I’ve taken some steps in that direction, and as soon as I hear back from Bluehost support I’ll be able to start taking more steps. Once I get things set up the way I want them, I’ll start moving older entries over.

I understand your pain. I went through something similar with my book group’s website, which has been around about as long as the SDC site (since 1996). The site is “http://www.fact.org/reading/”. First I did hand-coded HTML with a text editor, much like you. Then I modernized the design a little with CSS. Then I bought Dreamweaver, which gave me more tools than I needed. After I while I decided to go with something simpler and modern, so I moved to WordPress. It’s easy to use, customizable, and gives me exactly what I needed. The only painful part was bringing over the content, which took a couple of weeks of repetitive cutting-and-pasting.

BTW, it was nice to see you yesterday. I did some browsing but did not end up buying anything.

Thanks, A.T. I think this move is long overdue. Not only will it make updates easier, but we will be able to allow comments from our fellow diners and other folks.

I actually do have the new SDC blog up at this point and have imported some content to it, but I’m not totally happy with the appearance, so I’m holding off posting the URL.

I still enjoy the SDC archives. I remember many of those restaurants you reviewed that are now gone.

Indeed, I have fond memories of some that are gone.

I also have less fond memories of some others that are gone, too.
