This is being well covered, but for the historical record: Charles Munger, generally described as Warren Buffett’s right hand man. ZeroHenge obit by way of Lawrence.
Marc Thorpe, “Robot Wars” guy.
Victor J. Kemper, cinematographer. Pretty impressive body of work.
(The Saturday Movie Group watched “They Might Be Giants” before Thanksgiving. I like George C. Scott, and I’d never really realized how good looking Joanne Woodward is. But the movie seems interesting but flawed. I don’t want to spoil the ending because there really isn’t one.)
I saw “They Might Be Giants” once, probably in the 80s, and I remember liking it primarily because it was offbeat–but I haven’t had a burning desire to see it again.
I saw Kemper also directed “The Last Tycoon,” which is another odd movie. It’s based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s final, incomplete novel–sort of–and both were inspired by the life of Irving Thalberg. Consensus at the time was that it missed the mark but there’s something compelling about it for me. Worth a look.
Sorry, didn’t mean “directed” but “photographed”
Yeah, I’m glad we watched “TMBG”, but I have no great desire to re-watch it again anytime soon.
It is worth pointing out that we watched it on home video. As both Wikipedia and IMDB note, all the home video versions have several minutes cut versus the original theatrical version. I’m not sure it would have made any difference (both sources also say that the majority of the cutting was in the grocery store scene, which felt long already) but I do want to make that point…
