Firings watch.

Dino Babers out as Syracuse head coach.

Eight seasons, 41-55 overall, 20-45 in the ACC. One bowl appearance in the last five years.

The Orange (5-6) have lost six of their past seven games, marking the second consecutive year that featured a precipitous slide to end the season. Last year, Syracuse lost six of its last seven games.

Am I delusional, or didn’t Syracuse used to be called “The Orangemen”? Now it seems like they are just “The Orange”, and I can’t find any explanation for the name change online.

Edited to add: and shortly after I posted this, I found out that East Tennessee State had fired George Quarles as their football coach. 6-16 in two seasons, 3-8 this season.

No, it appears that you’re absolutely correct, you were right to protest. They were indeed the Orangemen… and Orangewomen, until, as everyone’s favorite news crowdsource states (and I am paraphrasing), a fit if gender neutrality erupted. However, it was apparently too ungainly to refer to them as Orangepeople or Orangepersons. This was back in 2004-2005, before anyone of orange ethnicity had attained public office, which could have provided ample publicity for the team.

But it does not mean you are NOT delusional.

I happen to believe that the Verde were once called… get this, not Verdemen or Verdewomen, but… The Crew. Not that I’m bitter. But I felt like being one who protests as well.

I swear, I looked at the Wikipedia entry while I was writing this post, and none of that information about the renaming was there at the time…
