From the 1950s, Shell’s series of “High Speed Flight” films. Lots of video of vintage airplanes, for those of you who like that sort of thing.
“Approaching the…….Speed Of Sound”:
“Transonic Flight”:
And “Beyond the Speed of Sound”:
There’s also a “simplified” version for those with short attention spans (and, possibly, children) that compiles stuff from all three films:
I thought I would watch the first video for a couple of minutes, and then stop. I ended up watching the whole thing, and I was really impressed. For something as old as this obviously is, it was super informative and well made.
I took science classes in high school, and a Physics 101 in college, so I knew a tiny bit about some of these principles. I was born in 1960, so I even remember the occasional sonic boom from the early days of jets flying over my house in west Michigan, and headed to Wisconsin.
I now understand so much more about some of the things that both pilots and aircraft designers must take into account when both designing and flying any high speed airplane. Of course, we are eons ahead of this film, and so I am sure that a lot of the things are taken into account for the pilot via computers, and also for the aeronautical engineers. But I would hazard a guess that they would still need to understand this subject completely, so as they are able to be able to both design the aircraft and to fly the aircraft to the best possible advantage of both safety, and also fuel economy, which is so very important for both the military and commercial sector.
Thanks for posting such an interesting video. I will try and get a chance to check back and watch the others sometime. Wishing you and yours a good weekend, and safety from both the Covid 19 virus and the crazy people who are on both sides of the issue. A trying time for many people, indeed.
