National Buy a Gun Day is next Sunday. Can you feel the excitement?
Unfortunately, it seems that the BAG website no longer exists. Also unfortunately, April 15th falls on a Sunday: while that’s good for taxes, it limits your gun-buying options.
As for the first, that doesn’t mean you can’t still observe BAG Day. Indeed, I encourage you: if you’ve been thinking about picking up a modern sporting rifle, or a Marlin 60, or pretty much anything else firearms related, this is the time to pull the trigger.
As for the second, since there’s no central authority, I’ll go ahead and say: anything you purchase this week counts for BAG Day. I’ll even extend this out to Tuesday of next week, since I’m a little behind putting this up.
What about your humble blogger? What am I getting for BAG Day?
Well…actually…I may end up setting a poor example. My initial BAG Day thoughts were to hold off on purchasing an actual gun, and instead put money into a few things I’ve been needing for my existing guns:
- A scout rifle sling from Andy’s Leather.
- A scope for the scout rifle. (I was leaning in the direction of the Leupold FX-II, but now I’m not so sure that the eye relief will work. What I really want is to find a place that has them in stock.)
- And I’d like to get a Quantum holster from Dragon Leatherworks for my Browning Hi-Power.
At least, that was where my thoughts were going. Then Mike the Musicologist and I happened to be someplace on Sunday, and both of us had our attention drawn to two (separate) items. In my case, what I found seems to be a pretty good deal (and I may trade off some other items I’ve accumulated), but I didn’t want to pull the trigger then. If it’s still there next weekend, it might follow me home, as it pushes a few buttons.
(If that doesn’t pan out, I’ll probably proceed with my original plan, and I might pick up one of those $250 Bodyguards from CDNN. I kind of want something I can easily slip into the pocket of my shorts for summer, or a suitcoat/dress pants pocket for meetings of what Lawrence refers to as my shadowy criminal cabal.)
I find myself here once again, as I do on occasion, and it always seems to be at the most opportune times. This time, I see that the BAG day is addressed. Awhile ago, I almost pulled the trigger on a Remington RM380, one of the new breed of tiny .380’s that used to be too small of a caliber, that are now considered just right.
I saw them advertised on Grab-a-gun site, a Michigan online dealer, that after rebate, would end up at 119$. I live in Michigan, so I also have 6% tax plus shipping, and 20$ for FFL, but still, a very good deal. I just couldn’t get excited about adding another caliber to the 9mm and .45acp that I already stock to feed my other carry pieces.
I had considered buying the gun and then selling it and making a nickel, but that would actually would be acting as a straw purchase, in a way. Not that I was worried about that letter of the law thing, but I don’t want to get into that whole issue at all. It just wasn’t worth the small amount of money we are talking about making to mess with. If it was in a 9mm, I would have been all over it, and might have bought 2.
Since BAG is on a Sunday, there is the possibility of the internet for purchasing your gun. But I think that you have the right idea, of extending the season, and make it either BAG week, or even month. Just like God said that the Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath, BAG is made for shooters, and so we can do it however we want. No matter how one celebrates, the important thing is that you take this time to actually celebrate the 2nd amendment freedom that we enjoy in America, and never take it for granted, because it is of course, not like this in many other countries.
